The California Condor

The California Condor, the largest north American bird is highly endangered b. Its numbers declined so fast that by 1982 only 22 remained. The birds were all taken into captivity and now a population of around 120 exists. Some have now been released in the Grand Canyon where they were last seen over 70 years ago.

The Condor is a scavenger it consumes the dead carcases of animals and originally would have travelled up to 150 miles a day in search of a meal. It can reach a height of 15,000 feet and travel at up to 55 Miles per Hour!

Condors start breeding when they are around seven or eight and only lay one or two eggs at intervals of two years. The nests are in cliffs or caves.
