Where do butterflies
go when the weather is bad?
When the weather is too cold or damp
butterflies hide under leaves or tuck themselves away
in a clump of grass. Butterflies are "cold-blooded"
and cannot generate their own body heat. They need
to bask in the sun's rays until they are warm enough
to fly.
Some butterflies can still fly in the
rain provided it isn't too heavy and there temperature
is warm enough for them to fly.
In the Welsh language one butterfly
(called the ringlet in English) flies so often in
the rain that it is known as "Iar Fach y Glaw"
which means the "little hen of the rain"
or "Rain butterfly"
