LEMURS

Lemurs are a special kind of Primate that are only found on the Island of Madagascar and on the Comoro Islands to the North West.There are 55 species and subspecies of living lemurs.

Lemurs tend to spend a lot of time in the forests climbing around in trees or big bushes. They can be found in very different habitats from the lish rainforests to the dry desert, Smaller lemurs tend to be active at night, but the larger kinds are active during the daytime.

Lemurs mainly eat leaves and fruits. For some of the smaller kinds that are active at night also eat a lot of insects.

Lemurs exist in a variety of forms. The smallest is the Pygmy Mouse Lemur which weighs only about an ounce and the largest the Indri weighs around 15 pounds.

Before the arrival of people on Madagascar there were many other kinds of Lemurs including one which weighed as much as an adult Gorilla.

Many kinds of Lemurs are threatened by the destruction of thier habitat which is mainly rainforest.
