The Plains Zebra
The Zebra is the African equivalent of the horse. It is found
throughout the plains grasslands of Africa from Sudan southwards.
The stallion will weigh around 550 pounds and be around
four and a half foot tall the mares are slightly shorter and
weigh around 480 pounds. The striped pattern is stronger and
covers more of the body in the equatorial races becoming fainter
further south. The extinct Quagga of the cape had stripes
only on the head, neck and back
Zebras live in herds and a stallion will hold a harem consisting
of a number of mares. There are also bachelor herds for the
younger stallions which have yet to form a harem of their
own.
Zebra mares give birth lying on their sides with the herd
and the stallion in close proximity. The young foals can stand
within 15 minutes.
