The Axolotl

Axolotls are a rare kind of salamander from Lake Xochimilco in Mexico. Unlike other salamanders they retain their gills and stay in the water in a "tadpole" form. They are the Peter Pan of the Amphibian world. The technical word for this is "Neotenous". Their name comes from a word in the Language of the Aztecs Nahuatl., meaning "Water Dog".

Adult Axolotls can reach about a foot in lenght and weigh about two ounces.they are carnivorous and eat insects and small fish and other animals that live in the water.
