...take the SANE option

Swansea Airport is to increase flights with the full support of the council.

£620,000 of Council Tax money has already been approved for Air Wales - a private enterprise.

The Welsh Assembly has blocked any work on the airport. They are asking the SANE questions -

How many flights does Air Wales plan?

Are they breaking European law by developing a Special Area of Conservation?

SANE are requesting:
1. a public enquiry including an environmental impact assessment be held into the proposed expansion of airport operations.
2. Swansea Council to accept their responsibilities to consult with local communities.

SANE Questions to Air Wales (we're waiting three months for an answer....)

What is the maximum number of commercial flights per day that are envisaged by 2008?

How many commercial night flights are proposed?

How many non commercial (private) flights are envisaged?

What is the split between passenger flights and freight?

Is the export and import of livestock amongst the plans?

It is intended to secure charter flights from the airport? (This is important
since it is the charter flights that utilise large aircraft and need to fly at all hours of the day and night)?

What are the largest aircraft that it is envisaged will be in use by 2008 and will this necessitate runway lengthening?

Urgent Update!

This week, planners at the Welsh Assembly have slapped a freeze on any further development at the Airport until they can establish Air Wales' long-term business plan, and whether European environmental protection laws have been broken.

Last week, Swansea council rubber-stamped £620,000 of council tax money for improvements at the airport. This behind-closed-doors decision means that tax-payers absorb the risks of Air Wales' commercial enterprise.

The next two weeks are critical for the future of Fairwood Common - if you would like to help please click here
