SANE DEMANDS

SANE are requesting:
1. an environmental impact assessment on the proposed expansion of airport operations before any further flights are added to schedules for
Swansea.
2. Air Wales to accept its social and environmental responsibilities; explain and seek consultation on its business plan
with affected communities

  • · Swansea Council and the Welsh Assembly Government are legally bound to reduce pollution and protect the Gower environment.
  • · A business expansion on this scale should be planned in consultation with the communities affected.
  • · An environmental impact assessment is needed. Fairwood Common is protected by international and national law (AONB, SSSI, SAC)
  • · Cheap flights won't be with us forever. Each of us subsidises aviation companies by £185.90 every year
  • · Aviation contributes around 5% of total global warming pollution. UK flights cost £2 billion a year to people's health and in damage from global warming. These figures are set to rise.
  • · The Gower is a great tourist attraction worth preserving
  • · Cardiff airport is an easy 40 minutes from Swansea

DETAILS

Three planning applications are currently under consideration for expansion of operations at Swansea airfield. This is part of government proposals to double UK flights to twice today's volume by 2020. An expansion of this magnitude in Wales would be in direct contradiction to commitments on sustainability from the Welsh Assembly Government .

As the impact of human-caused global climate change is becoming difficult to ignore, it is not enough to accept the claimed business benefits of airport expansion whether in Swansea, Newport or anywhere in Wales. These benefits must be balanced by the environmental damage caused by such a development.

Pollution from UK flights currently costs £2 billion a year to people's health and in damage to natural resources. This campaign is about balance and our legacy to the next generations.

Further public meetings will be announced soon.

Objections to the planning applications are flooding into the council, you can add your voice to the addresses below.
